Day 1: Bienvenue!

Welcome to our Eco-friendly guest house L’Esprit des Vignes in Saint-Vérand. We get to know each other partaking in a home made dinner.

Day 2: Mighty Cluny & Scenic Drive

A 30-minute drive this morning will take us to the town of Cluny from where in the 10th century Benedictine monks started dominating the western world. The mother of all abbeys, which was subject to no authority other than that of the Pope himself, peaked in the 12th century but was almost completely destroyed during the French Revolution. The remains are proof of its former prestige and influence and the town itself still has plenty of fine surviving Romanesque buildings. After lunch together in the old town, we discover the famous Chardonnay wine native of this region by tasting at a local winery. We finish the day relaxing at home, where you can enjoy one of the several hikes starting from our house, play “boules” or just have fun watching our goats playing around.

Day 3: Red Gamay and Iconic Hike

This morning will learn about the local Beaujolais grape: Gamay. We meet a local wine maker and see that there are ten famous grand Crus in the Beaujolais region, nothing to do with Beaujolais nouveau! After a light lunch paired with wines, we are a short drive away from the hike to the top of the iconic Rock of Solutré, a rare geological phenomenon overlooking the region and its prehistoric site of the eponymous Solutrean Paleolithic culture. After our visit, we will head back home and finish our French adventure with a gastronomic experience together.

Day 4: Return to Paris/Lyon. After breakfast, we drive you to the nearby train station in Mâcon and say Au revoir

*Itinerary subject to change based on farmers market and wineries.

If you are here on a Saturday, we may modify our itinerary to go to the nearby fabulous farmers market of Châtillon, one of the quaintest in France under its 15th-century wood covered market place, “Les Halles“. The food is fresh and colorful; even the local “Bresse” chickens sport the French flag colors!

Add an extra day to explore Beaune, its medieval hospice and taste the world famous local Pinot Noir!
