France is the most visited country in the world for several good reasons. Most North Americans travelers stay on the well-known tourist roads, but there are still places in France that are off-the-beaten path. Join us for this adventure along the coastline of Brittany to experience this beautiful Celtic region treasured by the French.
We will make our way along the coast following the Breton tradition of the Tro Breizh: a religious pilgrimage that every Breton had to make in his lifetime. As a Breton myself, I am the perfect person to help you discover how this region is much more than just French culturally!
Brittany has a reputation for amazing seafood, meat and vegetables. On this trip we will embrace local products, shop at typical farmers markets, celebrate fine regional and gastronomic restaurants and have hands-on experiences.
On our adventure, we’ll take in the natural beauty of the Breton coast: the longest of France. We will also enjoy small town life. Our small group will allow you to feel like a local as you connect with genuine French people during your relaxing vacation.
Day 1: DEGEMER MAT! Welcome to Brittany!
After meeting at the train station of Rennes (TGV) in the early afternoon, we make our way to Dinan, our home for the next three nights. After an orientation tour of the old medieval town, we will enjoy our first dinner together.
Day 2: The Emerald Coast
This morning we drive along the beautiful rugged Emerald coast of Brittany and have free time for lunch in the sea town of Cancale, famous for its food. We will taste fresh oysters with a view on the Bay of Mont Saint Michel before heading towards the walled city of Saint-Malo, home of mercenaries in the 16th century. You will have free time to explore the town before we returned to Dinan.
Day 3: Pilgrimage to the Mont Saint-Michel
This morning is market day in the old town of Dinan. Enjoy a relaxing morning before our pilgrimage to the Mont Saint-Michel in the late afternoon where we will learn about this “Merveille” abbey on a guided-visit with a local guide. As the crowds leave, we share a crêpe dinner together on the island.
Day 4: To the Pink Granit Coast
We drive west today from the Emerald coast with a stop at the Fort La Latte and Cap Fréhel peninsula to the Pink Granit Coast and its awe-inspiring rocks. We will picnic along the way enjoying more dramatic sea views. Our hotel for tonight is in the small town of Ploumanac’h.
Day 5: “Finistère”: the end of Earth in France
Enjoy the morning walking along the coast and interpreting the rocks before we head to the river harbor town of Morlaix and its colorful market. After lunch, we head again towards the coast and settle in our home for the next two nights in Roscoff. Tonight we partake in a fresh local seafood dinner together.
Day 6: Breton Island’s Life
This morning we take a short ferry trip to the scenic island of Ile de Batz. It is a great day to walk or relax on this island, or visit its botanical garden before taking the ferry back to Roscoff and enjoy more fresh breeze and coast scenery.
Day 7: Religion in Brittany: Catholic and Mystic
We start our day by visiting the traditional and elaborate parish closes of North-western Brittany, and pursue our drive through the rugged and deserted tallest hills of the region: the Monts d’Arrée, home of many Breton legends. We arrive in the town of Quimper in south Brittany, our home for the next two nights; we dine together tonight.
Day 8: Free day in Quimper
You will have the whole day to discover the pretty town of Quimper with its cathedral, learn about the traditional Breton Henriot earthenware and relax.
Day 9: Paul Gauguin in Brittany
After a stop at the local farmers’ market, we make our way east along the coast to the quaint village of Pont-Aven, home of several painters in the late 19th century who followed in the steps of Gauguin. After a picnic in Pont-Aven, we finish our tour of Brittany on the “Côte des Mégalithes” and settle in our last home on the Golfe du Morbihan.
Day 10: The Coast of Megaliths
More than 3,000 prehistoric standing stones spread in front of our eyes at Carnac. We will enjoy a tour learning about the legends created over the centuries on these famous stone lines. We also discover the scenic archipelago of the Golfe du Morbihan “the little sea” from a boat.
Day 11: Medieval Vannes
This morning we will explore the picturesque walled town of Vannes, and learn to cook a traditional Breton meal. This afternoon can be spent relaxing on a beautiful beach. We will finish the day with dinner together.
Day 12: Tour Ends After Breakfast. Kenavo!
We have finished our Tro Breizh, our Breton tour, together. After breakfast, I will drive you back to Rennes, plan a train from Rennes in the late morning.
